Moving Forward after Beta Epsilon Sigma and Hiyas ng Silangan 50th Anniversary

As the Grand Reunion Organizing Committee was making preparations for the 50th Founding Anniversary Celebration activities from 8-10 January 2016, the Martial Law Batches lead by Brod Bert Tagayuna suggested that all activities of BES-HNS should henceforth be pursued under a legal entity. On 13 November 2015, the UE BES-HNS Alumni Association, Inc. was incorporated with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock and non-profit foundation. Brod Mars became its first President. Later, he was replaced by Brod Bert during the Association’s First Annual Members Meeting at the Makati Sports Club on 3 February 2016. So far, two major projects have been undertaken by the Association – the Grand Reunion from 8 to 10 January 2016 under the leadership of Brod Mars and the CTB under the direction of Brod Bert T.

The Association’s Board of Directors and Officers conducted their first Planning Session from 4 to 5 March 2016 at Anvaya Cove, Morong, Bataan where the vision, mission and the plans over the long term have been drawn up. The initial plans for 2016 include the formation of the new Beta Epsilon Sigma Fraternity and the Hiyas ng Silangan Sorority as exclusive honor societies at the UE, assist the UE Administration in the revival of the Accounting Honors Program, and sponsor scholarship grants to deserving faculty and students who can be potential members of BES-HNS. If the planned programs prove to be successful in UE, they may be replicated in other colleges and universities to be determined by the Association.

The BES and HNS Honors Societies in the University of the East Caloocan

Last August 2019, the BHFI in coordination and support of UE Caloocan key officials, established the Beta Epsilon Sigma Honors’ Society and Hiyas ng Silangan Honors’ Society in UE Caloocan. With pioneer members of twenty (20) BES and forty-two (42) HNS, the BES-HNS Honor Societies immediately got a Recognized Student Organization status.

BHFI and BES-HNS Honors Societies To Date

From being a fraternity and sorority, the BES and HNS have evolved to Honors Societies. Such a name carries the exemplary performances of the BES-HNS members in their respective campuses. Be it academics, leadership, arts, music, and sports, the members made sure that they live up to the BES-HNS Honors Societies’ motto, SEMPER PREMIUM. They’ve also excelled and continue to excel at various school and interschool competitions. The organizations’ representatives are hailed Champions on interschool quiz bees, debates, and case studies.

In just 3 years, the thriving organizations have produced 26 Magna Cum Laude and 71 Cum Laude, 61 of them are already CPAs. The Honors Societies have also proudly yielded Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination (CPALE) topnotchers. In 2018, Brod Janmart De Meza and Sis Samantha Trazo, garnered 18th and 20th place respectively. And during the October 2019 CPALE, Sis Marian Sacriz and Brod Felnher Faelnar garnered 7th and 20th place respectively.

The BHFI aids its associate members in their pursuit of excellence by providing and sponsoring seminars, training, workshops, and the like. Whatever is lacking in the curriculum, the Foundation does its best to supplement. The BHFI also offers scholarships and stipends to allow the intellectually capable yet financially challenged members to continue with their studies. All this support does not end after graduation. From the review, to taking the CPALE, and to finding a job, the members help, guide, and take care of each other.

For the reason that BES-HNS is founded in this type of support system, we grew so fast and in fine feather. With our growing family, the GLCs of batch 2019 incorporated in the Securities and Exchange Commission the UE BES-HNS 2019 Honors Society Inc. Undergraduates are automatic part of this legal entity until they graduate and become junior members of the BHFI.

It has been about more than fifty (50) years since the Beta Epsilon Sigma (BES) Fraternity and the Hiyas ng Silangan (HNS) Sorority came to life. From humble beginnings to golden attainments, these unified groups of bright minds have not just wonderfully upheld their bond up to this day but have also shared this bond to the current generation. Through the Beta Epsilon Sigma Honors Society and the Hiyas ng Silangan Honors Society, the fire that drove them to excellence was rekindled once again.
